Established in 1927 Woodside Barracks is located on approximately 170 hectares of land, 25 kilometres east of Adelaide in the Adelaide Hills region. The property was originally known as Woodside Camp and was used for the training of light horse and infantry. The property was expanded during World War II to accommodate up to four infantry battalions and was converted into a
refugee camp in 1949 to house up to 3,000 people. Woodside Barracks is currently home to the 16th Air Land Regiment.
Army Headquarters South Australia is currently located at Keswick Barracks, with military establishments at Hampstead and Warradale. The 16th Air Defence Regiment is located at Woodside Barracks in the Adelaide Hills, approximately 45 minutes’ drive from Adelaide city.
Metropolitan Adelaide and regional sites (MARS) is a multi-site base. MARS headquarters is located at Keswick Barracks, on the south-west edge of the Adelaide central business district.
The MARS base comprises 29 Defence sites located across South Australia and Broken Hill. These include major sites of:
- Keswick Barracks: Anzac Highway, Keswick
- Warradale Barracks: Corner Oaklands and Morphett Roads, Oaklands Park
- Hampstead Barracks: Muller Road, Greenacres
- Woodside Barracks: 226 Nairne Road, Woodside
