Victoria Barracks in Paddington, built in 1841, was the third barracks built to accommodate military personnel in colonial Sydney. Having initially housed British regiments, it became home to colonial New South Wales units. Built using Hawkesbury sandstone and by both convict labour and contracted stonemasons, the base contains some of the most historically important colonial buildings in Australia and was heritage listed in 2004. During the Great Depression (1931-36) the base housed the Royal Military College. Victoria Barracks Sydney continues to be an important military base and is home to Army Head Quarters, Forces Command. The onsite Museum offers tours and has a prominent public profile.
In June 2018, AAFCANS refurbished the canteen upgrading the décor and equipment to provide a contemporary amenities space for base residents and visitors. The footprint was expanded to include a contemporary lounge booth dining, Foxtel, a USB charge booth.
A historic photo wall features in the dining precinct which celebrates the past and present achievements of the base. The lounge area is in joint residence with the Arthur C Hall Club.
Victoria Barracks Sydney (VBS) is located on a 12.5 hectare significant heritage site located between Oxford Street and Moore Park Road in Paddington. VBS is a high profile Army Base providing working accommodation for Resident Units.
There is a Shuttle bus service that provides a link between VBS, Defence Plaza Sydney and the Naval Base at Garden Island. There is also a Public bus service that services the City to Bondi route along Oxford Street at regular intervals.
